But wait, maybe you are one of those who are used to seeing only a three-digit number on the speedometer and hearing not a roar, but the incomparable roar of Japanese engines? Kawasaki or Harley Davidson, Yamaha or Indian, any motorcycle deserves to be cared for and properly stored. So, let’s discuss how to store your bike correctly and where it is best to do it.

Seasonal Motorcycle Storage: Key Features

Even if you know all the intricacies of preserving motor vehicles for the winter, the question of storing a motorcycle always makes every self-respecting motorcyclist think. Here begins an enumeration of options: a garage, a parking lot, a street, a shed in the country, in the end – where do you define your favorite bike? We must remember that the main enemy of any motorcycle is moisture. In a matter of days, it can begin corrosive processes, which will then be very difficult to get rid of.

How to properly store your motorcycle in winter.

The motorcyclist knows the names only six months of the year: from May to October, the rest of the time simply does not exist for him. What’s the point of going outside when your iron friend is locked up? After October, you don’t really ride much, so knowing how and where to store a motorcycle in winter is the number one duty of every rider. What you need to do before sending your motorcycle into hibernation: gasoline, tires, electrical wiring – detailed instructions were made about all this.

Conservation: Preserving a motorcycle for the winter is its full service, which includes changing the oil, flushing the gas tank, checking all the wires and much more, which will allow you to immediately get on the bike in the spring and start it with half a turn.

Do not rush to the garage, first you should go to the store and buy everything you need to handle the motorcycle: Silicone Grease, spray for metal surfaces, chain lubricant, wax polish, new engine oil, rags, canister of gasoline, additives for cleaning the fuel system.

Let’s start with the hottest – gasoline! Leaving a motorcycle with a half-empty tank for the winter – doom it to inevitable corrosion, it is not necessary. The motorcycle should be preserved with a full tank to prevent corrosive condensation from forming on its walls.

Needless to say, it is better to refuel with high-quality gasoline with the octane rating for which the engine is designed. Take the time and money to find proven fuel. If you are not sure about the gasoline that splashes in the gas tank, then it is better to drain it completely and refuel with good, high quality fuel.

Then the motorcycle must be washed: Here you can go in two ways: do everything yourself in the garage or go to the car wash. In most cases, they use products with very aggressive alkaline compositions that do not provide a protective coating and do not wash away dirt and hard-to-reach places. And this means that it is in them that corrosion will appear. Use a protective wax for hand washing motorcycles – these shampoos are specially formulated to keep your bike’s coating from deteriorating, rusting and staying clean for as long as possible. After a refreshing shower, we wipe the bike dry – just like people have.

Now you need to process the main nodes. All cables, hinges and handles are lubricated in the same place with engine preservation spray or universal WD-40. Pay special attention to the front fork and lubricate the chrome stays.

Next, we protect the wiring. The main enemies of the wiring: sub-zero temperatures, humidity and dampness, rodents. A special spray for processing electrical wiring will protect against all these problems: it works for just six months, and we spray high-voltage wires for every fireman with a spray from rodents – the smell will scare them away, not even letting them taste the wires. Silicone grease will protect rubber from hardening, cracking and aging.

Tire treatment cannot be skipped if you want the rubber to serve for a long time: in the winter, be sure to treat it with special foam. The rubber on the motorcycle is special, its composition is soft, so that the bike has high grip when cornering and leaning. It hardens and dries quickly, so ordinary silicone will not work here. The foam for the tires will keep the rubber as soft and durable. And do not forget about the tire pressure: it must be reduced to 0.5 atmospheres.

Removing the battery. At this stage, even the hardest biker will wipe away a stingy tear: disconnect the motorcycle from the power supply, that is, remove the battery. If you do not remove the battery, but simply decide to remove the terminals from it, then treat them with a protective spray to prevent corrosion.

Where is the best place to store your motorcycle?

Choose a storage location carefully – it must be safe, warm and ventilated. We do not consider options for storing a motorcycle on the balcony, on the staircase, in the front door, under the bed at my mother-in-law, in the rocket warehouse, in the basement of a nearby store – all this is not serious. Any self-respecting motorcyclist will make every effort to take care of his technique in the best possible way.

Outside: This can work only in summer, it’s free and motorcycle is always at hand. However, it’s unsafe, in bad weather it will start to deteriorate.

Garage: You can store your motorcycle in the garage in any season, as it’s  under the roof, under the castle. Yet, In an unheated garage, even a motorcycle prepared for storage is not protected from corrosion.

Paid Parking: This is considered one of the safest options, it can work as in summer, as in winter. It’s safe and ideal storage conditions. Yet, the price is high and there is a risk of corrosion in the case of an open parking lot.

Storing a motorcycle in a paid parking lot container: This option can work for any season. The container is easy to install and move by yourself, protects from snow and rain. However, it’s not heated, not ventilated, not very reliable.

Motorcycle storage services in a warm warehouse: Also this option is suitable for any season. It’s warm, dry, safe, constant ventilation and cleanliness. However, there is no permanent access (you need to order in advance).

Seasonal weather conditions will not be a problem for anyone who has taken care of both the bike and the storage location in advance.
