Consumer Trends for the Automotive Industry in 2020

Brandwatch data reveals some of the biggest consumer trends for the auto industry looking ahead to 2020.

In a recent report on consumer trends for 2020, Brandwatch, the English digital consumer intelligence company, surveyed 8,000 people around the world and studied social media on key topics and industries to see what changes we could see this year.

First: More Attention on Quality than Affordability

When respondents were asked which brand attributes were most important, quality was the most popular choice with 30% of the vote. Affordability followed, with 21%.

Yet, quality can mean different things to different people and different markets. Thus, it’;s important for car brands to dig deeper into this and find out which aspects (safety, aesthetics, reliability) are most important to their target audience, the report states.

Sustainability and Renewable Energies

Sustainability was not particularly popular when consumers were asked which attribute was important to them when choosing car brands (only 7% of respondents chose it), although many people around the world named renewable energy as one of 2020 biggest transformative technologies.

The importance of Good Customer Service

Globally, the quality of customer service is an important attribute, with 10% of preferences being the most important attribute for a car brand. As the report states, the negative reviews were mainly focused on people’s experiences, such as dealerships, warranties, repairs and things that don’t work.

Measurement of the Most Prominent Car Brands of 2020

The report states: “By looking at the top performing car brands on social media and searching in Q3 2019, we can get an idea of what the top performing brands of 2020 will look like.”

Tesla outperformed all of its competitors in terms of its visibility in search and social media, as well as its follower growth. This is a clear sign of the sustainable interest increase by customers, even though they don’t currently value it for affordability and quality.
