At KTM They Want Dani Pedrosa to Make a Wildcard This Year

KTM is already working on the 2022 bike. In the Austrian house things are done quickly, and they wish they could test the RC16 2022 in the race, either in the second half of this long season or in the last third, but for that they would like that the pilot was Dani Pedrosa.

“It is still too early to talk about wildcards, as we are still in the basic testing phase with the new bike,” says Pit Beirer, sporting director for the KTM team, in a Speedweek interview.

Although he later adds: “But in the second half of the year we would be very interested in doing some wildcards, so that we can see and judge the new bike in ‘race mode’. But for this we need a good bike and also a Dani Pedrosa who wants to race ”.

In Pedrosa’s contract with KTM, which both parties signed two years ago, there was no obligation to carry out wildcards, but there was the possibility of doing them if the Castellar del Vallés man accepted the proposal, something that he has not done so far. Pedrosa even has permission from KTM not to offer interviews, and he has not done them since, just a few statements.

At KTM they say they will not push Dani to run, but they do make his interest clear: “We certainly won’t force him, but our wish would be for us to wildcard him this year, because racing drastically reveals all weaknesses. We just saw it in Qatar,” says Pit Beirer.

Massimo Rivola, Aprilia’s technical director, had also said it, given the possibility that Dovizioso could make a wildcard with them: “what a race reveals is not the same as a test.”

Beirer insists on this point: “In winter you are very busy in theory and in building a lot of parts and new bikes. But in racing things look different than planned. Therefore, having a career with Dani would be extremely important”.

KTM does not count Mika Kallio as a possible wildcard, not even in the new ‘GP of his home’, the one in Finland, although KTM CEO Stefan Pierer had said that the Finn would not be denied this possibility.

But… “We have already discussed it with Mika and we are not going to do it,” says Pit Beirer. “That’s not a problem anymore”.

In the Austrian team they want the guru, Dani Pedrosa, to be the one to do a race and pass on his impressions as only he knows how to do that.
